Grassfire Burns an Estimated 1,000 Acres Near Capitan

CAPITAN — Strong winds are driving a fire that has burned an estimated 1,000 acres of grass in south-central New Mexico.
State Forestry Division spokesman Dan Ware said the blaze was reported at 11:30 a.m. today about 30 miles northeast of Capitan. The fire was burning on private and U.S. Bureau of Land Management land.
No structures are threatened.
Forestry Division crews — along with firefighters from the Corona Fire Department and area volunteer fire agencies — are tackling the blaze.
Ware said the cause is not known.
