NTSB Finds Cause of Crash that Killed 2 Near Mosquero

Associated Press
An airspeed indicator had incorrect markings in a single-engine airplane that crashed in northeastern New Mexico, killing the pilot and his passenger, federal investigators say.
The pilot and co-owner of the Bell Ranch, Jeffrey Lane, 57, and his passenger, Ryan Hartley, 34, of Roy, were killed last Aug. 15 when airplane crashed on rocky, uneven terrain three miles northwest of Mosquero.
They were in a 2005 Zlin Aviation Savage manufactured in the Czech Republic.
Lane and Hartley took off from the ranch airport in clear morning weather on a trip to survey the ranch for a new road.
Lane failed to maintain airspeed while maneuvering, and the airplane stalled and crashed 23 minutes later, the National Transportation Safety Board said.
An investigation found discrepancies between the airplane's airspeed indicator and the airspeed guidance provided in the aircraft's flight manual, the NTSB said in a report issued Wednesday.
Conflicting airspeed information provided by the airplane's manufacturer and the incorrect airspeed indicator markings contributed to the crash, the NTSB said.
Several experienced pilots interviewed by the NTSB during its investigation "stated that they had experienced stall conditions in the Zlin Savage well above the published stall speeds," the report said.
Lane had logged 3,400 of total flight time — five of them in the Savage, the report said.
