State Cites Company for Violations at Carlsbad Landfill

      SANTA FE — The state Environment Department has cited a company for solid waste violations at its Carlsbad landfill.
    The state says Lea Land Inc. violated its permit and state rules by accepting hazardous waste and asbestos at the landfill.
    Jim Norton of the department's Environmental Protection Division says the company also failed to monitor potential impacts the waste could have on groundwater.
    The department says it discovered the violations after receiving a citizen's complaint.
    The administrative compliance order requires that the company cap its current disposal cell and pay a $1.3 million civil penalty.
    Lea Land has 30 days to request a hearing and respond to the alleged violations.
