New Mexico Issues Notice of Violation to Pumice Mine

Associated Press
SANTA FE — The state Mining and Minerals Division has issued a notice of violation to a pumice mining operation in northern New Mexico's Jemez Mountains.
State officials claim Copar Pumice Co., based in Española, failed to reclaim its El Cajete Mine as required by state law and its mining permit.
The state established deadlines for starting and completing reclamation of the mine but the company hasn't complied. A penalty of $5,000 per day will be assessed until all required reclamation of the site is completed.
Mining and Minerals Division director Bill Brancard said the state takes this kind of violation seriously and it wants Copar to understand that refusing to do the reclamation work is not an option under state law.
