Las Cruces' First Month of Cell Phone Ban While Driving Nets 77 Tickets

Associated Press
LAS CRUCES — Las Cruces police issued 77 citations in the first month of the southern New Mexico city's ban on talking on cell phones while driving.
The ordinance, which went into effect Feb. 5, prohibits drivers from using a cell phone without a handsfree device.
The first violation is punishable by a $25 fine, the second by a $50 fine and the third and subsequent offenses by a $500 fine or up to 90 days in jail or both.
The ban includes text messages and e-mails while driving.
