N.M. School District Posts Personal Data Online

Associated Press

LAS CRUCES — The Las Cruces public school district has placed an employee on paid administrative leave after he unintentionally posted personal data about students and staff on an unsecured Web site.
Tom Warren, a part-time data analyst, posted the information for 50 special education students and 1,750 of the district's 3,800 employees online April 29. The error was discovered Monday, and Superintendent Stan Rounds ordered the data removed.
"This appears to be an isolated incident that was caused by human error,'' Rounds said. He said there was no indication the data fell into the wrong hands or was misused.
Warren was out of town at a conference and unavailable for comment, said his wife, Karen Warren, an Advanced Educational Services facilitator at Mayfield High School. She said her husband acted immediately to take down the information once the error was discovered.
The district was notifying parents and employees about what information was released. Rounds said those affected will be offered free credit fraud protection for up to one year.
The district plans to investigate how the mistake happened and will form a committee to review policies and procedures to ensure it doesn't happen again.
