Democratic Legislators Get Financial Help From Richardson

By Barry Massey
Associated Press

SANTA FE — Gov. Bill Richardson's political committee has handed out about $39,000 in contributions to candidates for the Legislature and other offices.
Most of the contributions went to incumbent Democrats facing primary election challengers.
Richardson reported a cash balance of $547,302 in his state campaign account as of last week, according to a campaign finance disclosure filed Monday with the secretary of state's office.
The committee, which was the fundraising organization for the governor's 2006 re-election, spent $205,351 during the past year, including contributions to candidates, the state Democratic Party and a group that backed a tax for a planned spaceport in southern New Mexico.
The governor's committee received no contributions but reported receipts of $14,820 from refunds, interest on its cash balance and the sale of equipment to Richardson's presidential campaign last year.
Receiving contributions from Richardson were: Sen. Carlos Cisneros, D-Questa, $5,000; Rep. Dan Silva, D-Albuquerque, $2,000; Sen. David Ulibarri, D-Grants, $1,000; Sen. Dede Feldman, D-Albuquerque, $1,000; Sen. Howie Morales, D-Silver City, $1,000; Sen. James Taylor, D-Albuquerque, $5,000; Rep. John Pena, D-Gallup, $1,000; Sen. John Pinto, D-Tohatchi, $1,000; Rep. Joni Marie Gutierrez, D-Mesilla, $2,500; Sen. Lynda Lovejoy, D-Crownpoint, $1,000; Sen. Mary Jane Garcia, D-Dona Ana, $1,000; Rep. Patricia Lundstrom, D-Gallup, $2,000; Rep. Richard Vigil, D-Ribera, $1,000; Rep. Rodolpho "Rudy'' Martinez, D-Bayard, $1,000; Sen. Shannon Robinson, D-Albuquerque, $5,000; Rep. Thomas Garcia, D-Ocate, $1,000; and Stephen Fischmann, a Las Cruces Democrat running against Republican Sen. Leonard Lee Rawson, $1,000.
The governor's committee gave $2,000 to the Senate Democratic Caucus, the organization of Democratic members of the Senate; and $5,000 to the re-election of Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver.
The state Democratic Party received $8,000 from the governor's campaign committee a few days after the February presidential caucus and a group that backed a spaceport tax got $10,000 in late March.
Voters in Sierra County approved a tax levy last month to help pay for construction of the spaceport, which is backed by Richardson as an economic development initiative for New Mexico.
Monday was the campaign finance filing deadline for candidates for the Legislature and other offices. However, computer problems caused Secretary of State Mary Herrera to extend the deadline by one day for candidates who were attempting to use the state's electronic filing system.
Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, who is running for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2010, collected $841,317 in contributions during the past year and spent $320,601. Her campaign reported a cash balance of $1.3 million.
Nearly all of her fundraising has been previously disclosed because Denish has been voluntarily releasing quarterly reports of her contributions and expenditures.
