Ex-Pine Ridge Tribal Councilman Sentenced in New Mexico

Associated Press
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A former tribal councilman from South Dakota will serve eight months in federal prison for a New Mexico drug charge.
Don Garnier was sentenced last week in Albuquerque, N.M., after getting picked up last month in Rapid City for a positive test for cocaine.
Garnier's sentencing had been delayed for outpatient treatment.
He and a co-defendant were arrested Sept. 19, 2007, near Raton, N.M., after officers found 21 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of their car.
The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council suspended Garnier and he later resigned.
He pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute less than 50 kilograms of marijuana.
Besides prison, Garnier must go through a substance abuse program, drug testing and not drink alcohol.
