Santa Fe City Worker Gets Probation in Drug Case

    SANTA FE — A city employee arrested on charges he dealt drugs during work hours has been sentenced to three years of probation in the case.
    Leroy Trujillo accepted a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to one felony count of attempt to traffic in a controlled substance. That charge can be dropped if Trujillo successfully completes his probation program.
    A separate count of drug trafficking and two counts of conspiracy to commit a crime were dropped.
    Trujillo was arrested April 8 after a grand jury indicted him and another city worker, 22-year-old Matthew Mares. Authorities say the two sold a prescription painkiller to undercover state police agents on two separate occasions.
    Trujillo sold he pills out of his truck and had his daughter in the vehicle with him at the time, while Mares sold the drugs from his city truck, said state police spokesman Peter Olson.
    Mares resigned from his job with the city street department shortly after his arrest. Trujillo, a supervisor for the city's streets division, returned to work but was placed on administrative leave Friday.
    Dan Marlowe, Trujillo's attorney, said his client "made a dumb mistake'' but that he's not a big-time drug dealer.
