Udall Has Big Fundraising Advantage Over Pearce

By Barry Massey
Associated Press
SANTA FE — Democrat Tom Udall had five times more money in his campaign treasury for New Mexico's Senate race at the end of last month than his Republican opponent, Steve Pearce.
Udall's campaign has a cash balance of nearly $2.9 million and Pearce had $531,624.
Pearce, unlike Udall, faced a fiercely competitive primary election race that forced him to spend part of what he had previously raised. Pearce defeated Heather Wilson in the June 3 primary election for the GOP nomination.
Udall ran unopposed in the primary, which allowed his campaign to raise and spend money with an eye on the November general election.
The two members of Congress are running for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Pete Domenici, who is retiring.
Udall raised $1.4 million from May 15 through June 30, according to the latest federal campaign finance disclosures. That included almost $1.3 million in contributions from individuals and political action committees.
Other receipts included interest on campaign balances, refunds and transfers from another political committee, such as a joint fundraising committee. His campaign reported debts of $118,778.
Pearce had total receipts of $851,152, including contributions of $790,963 from individuals and PACs.
Udall spent $1.4 million since mid-May. During that time, Udall's campaign has broadcast several television advertisements.
Pearce had expenditures of $566,735 and no debts.
The campaigns released summary pages of their campaign finance reports, which do not include an itemization of contributors or expenditures. It's not possible from the summary information, for example, to determine how much of Pearce's money was raised after the June primary election.
There's a considerable lag time before the complete reports become available on the Web site of the Federal Election Commission. That's because the reports are initially filed with the office of the secretary of the U.S. Senate, which submits the disclosures to the FEC.
House candidates, in contrast, file their campaign finance reports directly with the FEC.
Udall has total receipts of nearly $4.7 million and spent $2.5 million since launching his campaign. Pearce has raised $2.6 million so far and spent almost $2.1 million.
Pearce has represented the 2nd Congressional District, which covers southern New Mexico, since 2003. Udall has served in Congress since 1999, representing the 3rd District of northern New Mexico.
