Domenici Endorses Former Aide in 3rd District GOP Race

      SANTA FE — Sen. Pete Domenici has endorsed one of his former aides in the race for New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District seat.
    Domenici, R-N.M., said Marco Gonzales "understands our unique cultures and interests and is a man of principle and conviction."
    Gonzales, a Santa Fe attorney who worked for Domenici for 10 years, is running against Don East, a Rio Rancho contractor, in the June 3 GOP primary election.
    In January, Domenici sent a letter of support on behalf of Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White's bid for the Republican nomination for New Mexico's 1st District seat.
    White faces state Sen. Joe Carraro, R-Albuquerque, in the Republican primary.
    Domenici said Friday he would not endorse Heather Wilson or Steve Pearce before the primary. Wilson and Pearce are giving up their New Mexico congressional seats to run for the GOP nomination for Domenici's Senate post.
    Domenici is retiring at the end of his sixth term in January because he has an incurable brain disease.
