Manzano Mountains Fire Expected To Be Contained by Sunday

Associated Press
Fire crews expect to have a blaze that burned 59 homes and more than 21 square miles in central New Mexico's Manzano Mountains fully contained by Sunday, nearly a month after it started.
Despite windy conditions Saturday, fire information officer Linda Kearns said firefighters were testing the containment lines, cleaning up equipment and reseeding some of the burned areas of the Trigo Fire.
"It looks good out there,'' she said.
Sen. Pete Domenici visited the Sherwood Forest subdivision north of the fire's edge, where the last of the 400 evacuees were allowed to return last Tuesday.
More than 480 people were assigned to the fire Saturday, along with 2 helicopters, 14 engines and three water tankers, Kearns said. Air tankers were available should they be necessary.
But crews were expected to start demobilizing through the weekend, she said.
Fighting the fire has cost more than $10 million.
The wildfire, which started April 15, burned 13,709 acres. Firefighters had thought it was nearing containment when windy conditions fanned the flames and sent debris over the containment lines, burning many of the homes and forcing evacuations.
