A Shiprock man accused in the execution-style shooting of three people on the Navajo Nation won't be returning to New Mexico until after the new year.
Michael Johnson, 27, made an initial appearance in federal court in El Paso on Wednesday where U.S. Magistrate Norbert Garney notified him of the charges he faces.
Johnson is scheduled to appear in the El Paso court again on Jan. 3 for an identity hearing, said Shana Jones, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the western district of Texas.
Authorities caught up with Johnson in Mexico on Saturday.
He is the last of four people to be arrested in the 2005 slaying of Bobby Wayne Fulton, 22; Lars Yazzie, 18; and Vicki Benally, 26.
Last year, police arrested Darcus Manus, 22, of Shiprock; Chuck Nahkai, 29, of Beclabito; and Eugina Cowboy, 22, of Shiprock.
They, along with Johnson, have been charged with first-degree murder, firing a weapon to further a violent crime, aiding and abetting the commission of offense against the U.S. and distributing a controlled substance on the Navajo Nation.
Authorities have said all of the victims appeared to have been shot at close range inside their car, which was parked along a dirt road near the Hogback chapter house.
