Border Patrol Agent Accused of Helping Smuggle Immigrants

Associated Press
EL PASO — A U.S. Border Patrol agent was indicted with two other men on federal charges of money-laundering and human smuggling.
Jesus M. Huizar, 28, was arrested Tuesday along with Chihuahua residents Emeterio Sigala-Favela, 37, and Luis Carlos Chacon-Rubio, 32, according to the U.S. attorney's office for the Western District of Texas in San Antonio.
The indictment alleges the three suspects had conspired since 2005 to smuggle more than 100 undocumented immigrants into the U.S. from Mexico. Huizar was allegedly paid $500 for each migrant who crossed the border.
The indictment also seeks the forfeiture of a safe house Huizar reportedly owns in El Paso and a monetary judgment of $500,000.
Huizar, who's worked for the Border Patrol for five years, faces up to 30 years in federal prison, if convicted. Sigala-Favela and Chacon-Rubio face up to 10 years in prison.
The suspects were in custody at the El Paso County Jail. No bond had been set.
