Governor Planning To Get Ford SUV Hybrid

Associated Press
SANTA FE — Gov. Bill Richardson says he's ready to give up his gas-guzzling SUV for a less thirsty model.
The administration plans to buy a Ford Escape Hybrid to replace the governor's Lincoln Navigator, spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said Wednesday.
"They're trying to locate one ... and get it here as fast as possible,'' Gallegos said.
The spokesman confirmed the planned purchase after a news conference at which Richardson said he was looking at more fuel-efficient vehicles.
"I believe I should lead by example,'' the governor said.
The Ford Escape Hybrid's four-wheel-drive model gets 33 miles per gallon in the city and 29 miles per gallon on the highway, according to the manufacturer.
The Lincoln Navigator gets 13 miles per gallon in the city and 18 miles per gallon on the highway, the manufacturer says.
Hybrid vehicles are powered by internal combustion engines but also are equipped with batteries that are recharged while driving and an electric motor to assist with power.
