SANTA FE The state is requiring a new immunization for seventh-graders this fall, and the Department of Health recommends parents have their students vaccinated now to beat the back-to-school rush.
Students must have Tdap tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine if at least five years have passed since they've had a vaccine containing tetanus.
It's the first year the state has required the vaccine, which protects adolescents and adults from three serious diseases. The requirement reflects the availability of a combination vaccine, the Health Department said.
Tetanus causes a painful tightening of the muscles, usually all over the body. Diphtheria, which causes a thick covering in the back of the throat, can lead to breathing problems, paralysis and death. Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, causes severe coughing spells. It can lead to pneumonia and hospitalization from complications.
People who don't have a health provider or lack health insurance can call a public health office, which are located in every county, the Health Department said.
