Family Says Las Cruces Soldier Dies in Iraq

Associated Press

LAS CRUCES — A Las Cruces soldier has died in Iraq, his family said, but the military had not given them details.
Army Sgt. Matthew Apuan, 27, died of a head wound, the 27th New Mexican killed while serving in Iraq.
The soldier's father, Charles Apuan, said he was notified late Sunday by a military chaplain and hoped to receive more information later in the week.
The elder Apuan said his son, a tank gunner with the 1st Cavalry based at Fort Hood, Texas, was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. His son was stationed at Camp Falcon on Baghdad's south side but soldiers recently were temporarily deployed to other areas.
Apuan graduated from Mayfield High School in 1998 and joined the Army in March 2001. He studied hotel management at New Mexico State University for three years before joining the Army and hoped to return to college after his enlistment ended in 2008, his father said.
Apuan is survived by his parents, Charles and Sandra Apuan, and his sister, Amiee Apuan, all of Las Cruces.
