Laser Beamed at Airliner Over Phoenix Airport

The Associated Press
PHOENIX   —   A laser beam pointed at an aircraft Tuesday night originated from an area northeast of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, officials said Wednesday.
Pilots said their vision was not affected, and passengers were not in danger, said the Phoenix Aviation Department in a press release.
The light was pointed at a Southwest Airlines flight that was coming to Phoenix from Albuquerque, N.M. about 6:40 p.m., said Brandy King, a Southwest Airlines spokeswoman.
Phoenix police, the Transportation Security Administration and the FBI are investigating.
Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta announced Wednesday the Federal Aviation Administration will require pilots to immediately report laser incidents to air traffic controllers, who will repeat broadcast warnings and quickly notify law enforcement.
Mineta said 31 incidents have been reported since New Year's Eve, including the Tuesday incident in Phoenix.
