SANTA FE New Mexico has filed a brief in support of several states that have sued the Bush administration over changes it made to the State Children's Health Insurance Program.
Gov. Bill Richardson says the program has been instrumental in giving children under the age of 5 an opportunity for health care coverage and that the federal government should not restrict states' efforts to cover its citizens.
The changes to SCHIP last year made it harder for states to extend government-sponsored health insurance to children whose family's income exceeds 250 percent of the poverty level, or $44,000 for a family of three.
The states that filed the lawsuit are New York, Maryland, Illinois and Washington.
In addition to New Mexico, California, Connecticut and Massachusetts have come out in support of the legal action.
