NMSU History Department Founder Dies Suddenly

Associated Press

LAS CRUCES — The man credited with founding the history department at New Mexico State University has died, the school announced Friday.
Monroe L. Billington died suddenly on Tuesday. He was 80.
"It was a real shock to us,'' said Jeffrey Brown, head of the history department at NMSU. "We had just seen him at a history department picnic.''
Billington taught history at the university level for 40 years, starting his career as a professor at the University of South Dakota before moving on to the University of Toledo and then to NMSU.
At NMSU, Billington headed the history department from 1968 until 1975. He helped create an independent history department and the public history program. An award named in his honor is given each year to the student with the best master's thesis.
Billington also initiated the Lydie Thiery Hull Endowment that supports history graduate students, the school said.
Billington retired from NMSU in 1995 and had written 15 books, and more than 80 articles, reviews, essays and chapters on topics such as agriculture, religion, segregation and politics.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma; his children, Marion, Mari and Melinda; his stepchildren Randall, Richard, Rosemary and Ruthann; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Las Cruces.
