Unemployment Still Rising in Northwest New Mexico

Associated Press
FARMINGTON — The state says unemployment in the Farmington area rose to 10.4 percent in January, a sharp jump above the 9.4 percent unemployment numbers measured in December.
Over the year, the region's unemployment rate has nearly doubled from the 5.3 percent of the work force that was jobless last January.
Through January, the Farmington area remained the state's metropolitan statistical area with the highest unemployment rate.
State data shows the average unemployment rate that month for New Mexico was 8.2 percent.
Albuquerque reported increased unemployment at 8.9 percent, Santa Fe increased to 7.7 percent and Las Cruces fell slightly to 8.4 percent.
Farmington's unemployment rate also was above the national average of 9.7 percent.
