UPDATED: Emergency 911 Service Knocked Out in West-Central N.M.

Associated Press
GRANTS — Much of west-central New Mexico was without emergency 911 service, long-distance phone service and the Internet on Tuesday after a truck driver hit and damaged a fiber optic cable over a roadway.
New Mexico Department of Public Safety spokesman Peter Olson said emergency calls for all of Cibola and McKinley counties and part of Catron County were being rerouted with the help of other counties and ham radio operators.
Olson said everything but local phone service was knocked out when the cable east of Grants was damaged. He said authorities were hopeful service would be restored by Tuesday night.
Qwest Communications spokesman Mark Molzen said crews were on the scene and the company's priority was to restore 911 service.
Olson said anyone with emergency needs in Cibola, McKinley and Catron counties can call (505) 722-2002.
