Farmington OKs Drilling Natural Gas Wells in City Parks
Associated Press
FARMINGTON A company plans to drill natural gas wells in two Farmington parks after the work was approved by city councilors.
Merrion Oil & Gas still needs special permits before beginning the wells, but Tuesday's unanimous council vote paves the way for drilling.
The northwestern New Mexico city originally approved agreements for drilling in September 2008 despite petitions from residents opposing them. Those agreements expired, and Merrion reapplied to drill the wells.
Merrion investment manager George Sharpe says Farmington will receive $50,000 for wells in Glade Park and about $30,000 for wells in Westland Park.
Citizens who live near the wells will be informed about the drilling as part of the special permit process.
Sharpe says if the council approves the permits, Merrion expects to drill this fall.
