N.M. Task Force To Focus on Reducing Poverty

Associated Press

SANTA FE — Gov. Bill Richardson says he will form a task forced aimed at reducing poverty in New Mexico.
The governor made the announcement Friday after a roundtable discussion with poverty experts and community leaders.
Richardson says New Mexico's economy is expanding, but figures show the income gap is widening. He says the state must be bold with its solutions to help struggling families make ends meet.
The task force will be charged with developing specific recommendations for legislative, regulatory and infrastructure initiatives to reduce poverty and income inequality in New Mexico.
The governor wants the group to look at initiatives to address hunger, housing and child care needs, a fair minimum wage and access to higher education, among other things.
Richardson wants the group to submit its recommendations to him in September.
