Vigil Hearing Rescheduled To Dec. 1

    Associated Press
A federal judge has rescheduled a hearing for a defense effort to have former state Treasurer Robert Vigil's attempted bribery conviction overturned.
The hearing, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was moved to Dec. 1 by U.S. District Judge James Browning.
The government had requested the delay, saying one of the prosecutors assigned to the case was on vacation through Nov. 7. The government also said there wasn't enough time to respond to defense filings that are due today.
Vigil was convicted Sept. 30 of one count of attempted extortion. He was acquitted on 23 other charges of extortion and racketeering, ending one of the most highly publicized public corruption trials in state history.
The attempted extortion count involved a former treasurer's office employee, George Everage. Prosecutors said he was pressured by then-Treasurer Vigil to hire the wife of ex-Treasurer Michael Montoya as a subcontractor.
Vigil's attorney, Sam Bregman, contends there never was a contract for the alleged deal. During the trial, the defense portrayed the matter as a failed business negotiation between Everage and Montoya's wife.
