Rio Rancho Wells To Reduce Energy Use

Associated Press
RIO RANCHO — One of New Mexico's fastest growing cities has enrolled in the Public Service Company of New Mexico's program to reduce energy use during periods of peak demand.
Five water well sites maintained by Rio Rancho's utilities division will reduce their energy use when called upon by PNM. The city will receive monetary payments in exchange.
PNM calls on the program's participants to trim use during days of peak electricity demand between June and September. This allows PNM to reduce loads on transmission lines and minimize purchasing electricity from other, more expensive sources.
Rio Rancho Mayor Tom Swisstack says that by reducing demand rather than increasing electricity generation, the city is helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
