Consultant Says Santa Fe Needs Sewer Rate Hike

Associated Press
SANTA FE — Rising sewer costs could mean a big rate increase for Santa Fe residents.
A consultant has told the city that not enough revenue is coming in to cover costs and that a rate hike somewhere around 47 percent is needed over four years.
StepWise utility advisers president Jason Mumm said the city should immediately increase sewer rates by 20 percent this year and then add another 9 percent each year for three years.
City councilors on the Public Utilities Committee told city staff Wednesday to begin the process of holding hearings on formal ordinances to hike rates somewhere between that level and a lower level also analyzed by the firm.
Mumm said the average customer's sewer bill is about $22.50 and under the most aggressive proposal would increase to $35.61 by fiscal year 2013-2014.
