Cordova Man Accused of Killing 17-month-old Son

    CORDOVA — A 17-month-old boy was killed when he was hit by a bullet fired from an assault rifle that police say his father had loaded in a Cordova home.
    State Department of Public Safety spokesman Peter Olson says Aiden Montalvo died Thursday from a gunshot to the chest.
    The child's father, 26-year-old Joel Montalvo of Cordova, has been released on $20,000 bond after being arraigned in Rio Arriba County Magistrate Court in Tierra Amarilla.
    The Santa Fe New Mexican reports Montalvo has been charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in death.
    Chief Deputy District Attorney A.J. Salazar says the father might have twice tried to fire the .223-caliber rifle after loading a round, the first attempt being a misfire.
