Gov. Considering Special Session After June Primary

Associated Press
SANTA FE — Gov. Bill Richardson is now leaning toward calling a special legislative session on health care after the primary election.
A spokesman for Richardson, Gilbert Gallegos, says the governor most likely will call lawmakers back to Santa Fe sometime between June 3 and the Democratic National Convention, which opens Aug. 25.
Gallegos said last month that Richardson was considering calling a special session in May.
But Gallegos says Richardson began changing his mind after recent meetings with state Senate leaders.
Richardson unsuccessfully pushed for a universal health care plan during the 30-day legislative session that ended in mid-February.
The House approved a diluted version of Richardson's measure but the Senate never considered it before the Legislature adjourned.
