Groups Warn of Harms From Thrift Store Dumps
Associated Press
Charities are complaining of hardships caused by people who dump unusable items at non-profit thrift stores instead of making a trip to a city landfill or transfer station.
Barrett Foundation director Dorothee Otero, who also runs The Barrett House Attic, said there is usually a Monday morning pile of useless items in the alley behind her store. She recalled finding a broken washing machine recently.
The nonprofits must pay staff to load trucks and make a run to the dump, which cuts into profits that are used to support emergency shelters and other programs for the poor or homeless.
Otero said donations of "gently used items" are welcome.
