Work To Begin To Widen Road Between Deming and Bayard

Associated Press
SILVER CITY — State Department of Transportation officials say work should begin as early as February 2009 to expand U.S. 180 from two lanes to four lanes between Deming and Bayard.
The development engineer for the $46 million project, A.J. Romero, says the 42-mile stretch will have two, 12-foot lanes divided by an 8-foot rumble strip.
He says a lot of U.S. 180 traffic crashes are head-on, and there are a lot of vehicles that run off the road.
Romero says a four-lane roadway will eliminate the need for motorists to drive into oncoming traffic to pass.
And he says the expansion could help economic development in the area.
