Warning Issued for Torrance County Water Company

      SANTA FE — The state has issued a drinking water warning for the approximately 120 customers served by the Homestead Water Co. in Torrance County.
    The state Environment Department says nitrate levels in the water are too high.
    The agency advises consumers to avoid giving the water to infants and avoid boiling the water, which can concentrate the nitrates.
    The department also says healthy adults should exercise caution in drinking the water.
    The agency says long-term exposure to high nitrate levels in drinking water has been associated with increased urine output, increased starchy deposits and hemorrhaging of the spleen.
    The department also says long-term exposure can lead to increased risk of certain types of cancer.
