N.M. Fines Medical Center for Alleged Waste Violations

Associated Press

SANTA FE — The state Environment Department says a Santa Fe medical center illegally disposed of infectious waste at a local landfill.
The department has issued an administrative compliance order to St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, along with a $55,800 penalty.
A spokesman for St. Vincent, Arturo Delgado, says the hospital is aware of the penalty and will respond to the alleged violations within 30 days.
The violations stemmed from inspections done in 2007 that determined the hospital trucked three loads of infectious waste to a landfill.
The department says that waste included gauze, bandages, medical equipment, plastic tubing and syringes contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious substances.
