Bush Signs New Mexico Water Legislation

Associated Press
New Mexico will get help from the federal government to more accurately assess its water resources and plan for future needs under a measure signed by President Bush.
The legislation authorizes the Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Geological Survey to provide specific technical assistance to the state engineer's office for determining water resources in New Mexico and their future use.
The legislation was backed by Sens. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., and Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M.
Domenici says that as New Mexico grows, it's imperative that the state has a more accurate understanding of its water resources.
The legislation also authorizes $3 million for five years to the state engineer's office to perform hydrologic models of New Mexico's most important water systems, basins and tributaries.
