Little Consensus at States Energy Meeting in Wyoming
Associated Press
JACKSON, Wyo. — Lawmakers from around the West have wrapped up a three-day symposium on energy issues without reaching consensus on tough questions about how to address carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants.
About 75 state lawmakers from around the West have been in Jackson for the Wyoming-sponsored Western States Energy and Environment Symposium.
The states agreed on the need to simplify construction of new power lines. But the states didn't agree on how to respond to proposals pending in Congress that would impose a cap-and-trade system requiring coal-fired power plants to buy licenses to pollute.
Representatives from some energy-producing states say they oppose cap and trade, but lawmakers from some West Coast states say they favor the proposal.
