Santa Fe Population Nears 72,000

Journal Staff Report
Santa Fe's population is close to 72,000 in the U.S. Census Bureau's latest population estimates, released Wednesday.
The new figures show the City Different has grown by about 15 percent since the last official census count in 2000.
The estimate that Santa Fe had 71,831 residents as of July 1, 2008 represents an increase of about 1,100 from the Census Bureau's 2007 figure for the city.
Santa Fe is New Mexico's fourth largest city — Rio Rancho has blitzed into third place over the past several years and has about 8,000 more people than Santa Fe in the new estimates. Albuquerque has 522,000 residents in the latest report, and Las Cruces' population estimate is 91,865.
Santa Fe County has a population of 143,937, up from 142,369 in the previous year and from 129,292 in 2000.
Not all parts of northern New Mexico are growing, according to the Census Bureau.
Los Alamos County's population estimate of 18,150 is down by about 200 from the 2000 census and represents a drop of more than 500 residents between 2006 and 2008.
Española's estimated population of 9,691 is essentially the same as the count at the start of the decade. Las Vegas, N.M., has dropped from 14,565 in the 2000 census to 13,818 according to the new estimate.
Taos is going in the other direction, however. The town of Taos is at 5,551, up from 4,700 in 2000; Taos County has grown from 29,979 to 31,546 this decade.
The 2008 population estimates for other communities around New Mexico include: Angel Fire, 982; Chama, 1,347; Cimarron, 816; Eagle Nest, 299; Mora County, 5,052; Pecos, 1,489; Questa, 1,907; Red River, 515; and 356, Wagon Mound.
More detailed information is on the Census Bureau Web site, www.census.gov.
