The body of an El Rito woman, who was reported missing this summer, was found along a highway north of Abiquiu on Friday.
Joanne Marie Ocana, 44, was last seen the night of Aug. 15 asking people for money along N.M. 110 in El Rito, according to State Police.
A woman who lives on N.M. 554 located about 9 miles from where Ocana was last seen called police Friday night after she saw “dogs chewing up on what she thought was a human skull,” State Police Lt. Eric Garcia said.
Authorities arrived shortly after and found that her body had been dismembered.
“We don't know if that was done intentionally by someone or if it was because of wild animals (or dogs) getting to the body,” Garcia said.
The state Office of the Medical Investigator deemed Ocana's death to be suspicious. Police continue to investigate the matter.
