S.F. Woman Treated After Pit Bull Attack

A Santa Fe woman was hospitalized Friday after she was attacked by a pit bull.
Desiree Martinez, 23, told the Journal that the dog bit into her right leg and that the wounds left "four holes, an inch deep." She said she also suffered wounds to her left leg, hip and arms.
"I didn't know if I was going to live or die," she said by telephone after she was treated and released from Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center.
Martinez was walking up to a friend's apartment in the 300 block of Jemez Road about 7:30 a.m. just before the attack occurred, according to the victim and Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano.
As she walked up to the front of the complex, a pit bull came running from the backyard of the property and attacked Martinez as she was standing in the driveway, Solano said.
"I didn't see him standing there," she said. "But I guess he heard me walking."
The victim said she screamed for help, but no one came until two women rushed toward her to get the dog away from her a couple minutes later. However, the dog continued to attack her.
Solano said a person believed to be the dog's owner then ran out of his residence and managed to get the pit bull off Martinez. The sheriff said when deputies arrived later to investigate the attack, they found the dog tied to a tree in front of the property.
Solano said the man believed to be the owner is not claiming ownership of the dog, though investigators continue to look into that matter.
The dog has been impounded and quarantined, Solano said.
