Santa Fe police on Wednesday were looking for a felon on probation whose latest alleged crime was smashing his car into an officer's vehicle and then fleeing from authorities.
Alex Ramon Sosaya, 30, of Albuquerque had been a fugitive since June 2 for a probation violation. He had served a prison sentence after a 1999 conviction for his part in a string of armed robberies, one of which included a kidnapping.
Sosaya was found in Santa Fe, where his mother lives, Tuesday morning after an officer spotted a truck that recently been reported stolen, according to Capt. Gary Johnson.
Officer Corrine Jones followed the black Mazda 2000 into the dead end of Amado Street. Jones pulled in behind Sosaya, who then shifted into reverse and accelerated the truck into the officer's unit. Jones was not injured, Johnson said.
Sosaya jumped over a nearby wall and fled the area. Officers were able to identify him after finding his wallet inside the truck.
Later that day, police executed a search warrant of Sosaya's mother's house in the 5900 block of Sierra Nevada, but the suspect was not there.
Police continue to look for him.
“This is a major bad boy,” Johnson said. “This guy definitely is a flight risk and a danger to the community.”
Sosaya is now wanted on Santa Fe charges that include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, receiving stolen property and aggravated fleeing of a law enforcement officer.
In November 1998, a Bernalillo County grand jury indicted Sosaya on several felony charges after he and a group of other men were involved in armed robberies in the Albuquerque area.
He pleaded guilty to many of those charges, including conspiracy, kidnapping, armed robbery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery for which he received a 30-year prison sentence, with 20 years suspended, according to online court records. Sosaya served about eight years behind bars before being released on probation in September 2007, according to Department of Corrections spokeswoman Rosie Sais.
A DOC arrest warrant was issued recently after Sosaya failed to check in with his probation officer in late May, Sais said.
