Student Called 'Lively, Sweet'

News of Megumi Yamamoto's death spread across the University of New Mexico campus Thursday, where she was remembered as a “real lively and sweet” student who played violin and once headed the physics club at Cal State-Long Beach.
Christina Rosado-Maher, a UNM adviser for international programs, said Yamamoto was modest about the challenges of being a Ph.D. student in physics. She had started at UNM on a student visa this spring.
“I always complimented her on being really bright, and I can only imagine what it's like to get a Ph.D. in physics, and she would always just downplay that,” Rosado-Maher said.
Authorities notified Yamamoto's family in Japan of her death.
Irene Howard, administrative coordinator for the Cal State-Long Beach Physics and Astronomy department, recalled that Yamamoto's mother traveled to California from Japan to be at her daughter's graduation in May 2008.
“Her mom came all the way down here for graduation and brought her this little pretty gold dress,” Howard said, “She was so proud. She had me take her pictures all over.”
As head of the physics club, Yamamoto “sent really nice, really friendly e-mails out to everybody,” Howard said.
