          Music Group Plans Youth Competitions
        The New Mexico Hispano Music Association will hold a Children, Youth and Youth Group Talent Competition on Friday at Big Rock Event Center, Ohkay Casino, one mile north of Española.
        Competition will be in the following categories: Children's Song of the Year, Child Artist of the Year, Youth Song of the Year, Youth Artist of the Year and Youth Group of the Year.
        Registration is $30. Participants will perform one Spanish or bilingual song, and solo artists must provide two compact discs of the music track from which he/she will perform.
        Registration and warm-up will begin at 7 p.m. on the night of performance. The order of performance schedule will be determined by a number draw at 7:30 p.m.; competition will begin at 8 p.m.
        The 2009 NMHMA Awards ceremony will be Jan. 16 at the Okhay Casino Conference Center. For more information, visit www.nmhma.org.
        Southwest CARE Has AIDS Day Events
        Southwest CARE Center will host an event to honor those we have loved and lost to AIDS at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, World AIDS Day, at the Railyard.
        The event is free and open to the public. Specific activities will include the lighting of farolitos decorated with the red AIDS ribbon at sundown, a nondenominational prayer, songs of remembrance and love, and the opportunity for those gathered to share memories and stories.
        Southwest Comprehensive AIDS-care, Research and Education Center was founded in 1996 by Dr. Trevor Hawkins. The center provides treatment, case management services, research and prevention, and education for HIV-positive individuals in New Mexico and serves about 600 people.

        SFCC Hosts Open House for Kids
        Santa Fe Community College's Early Childhood Development Center will host an open house from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Dec. 5, on the south side of the SFCC campus, 6401 Richards Ave.
        The family-friendly event features tours, hands-on art activities, a kids' cooking class and presentations, including a parent education workshop led by family consultant Anna Marie Garcia. Dr. Frederick Kullman, a local family physician, will discuss current health issues and answer questions.
        Dahlia Cummings, the "Books and Babies" specialist with Santa Fe's South Side Library, will use books, props and singing to teach parents about the importance of reading to children. To learn more, call 428-1380.
