Obituaries



          JIM WEST of Los Alamos passed away Thursday, Nov. 19, in Baytown, Texas, where he underwent a yearlong struggle with cancer.
        He was born in Springfield, Mo., to Herbert and Opal West on Feb. 20, 1934. Jim worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, retiring in 1991. He was an active member of the Pajarito Church of Christ in White Rock. He was elected to the Los Alamos County Council and served as chairman, the position he held till health required him to resign. He managed the Los Alamos County fair rodeo for 13 years. He was a tireless worker for his community and state. Living and setting by example his faith in God and mankind, he was also known for his ability to be ready for a 3,000-mile motorcycle trip with less than a three-hour notice. He will be missed by his many friends and loved ones.
        He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Janet.
        He is survived by his sisters, Valdareia and husband Bill Boatman of Kansas, Linda Sue and husband Wayne Kelley of Texas, and Cindy and husband Darryl McKee of Missouri; nine nieces; one nephew; 18 great-nieces and nephews; four great-great nieces and one great-great nephew.
        Services are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. at the White Rock Baptist Church, with J.B. Harrington, former minister of the Los Alamos Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow at Guaje Pines Cemetery.
