Teen in Hazing Case Worked Out With Dons

By Phil Parker
Journal Staff Writer
One of the six students charged in the Robertson High School football team rape and hazing case has worked out three times over the past week and a half with the West Las Vegas High squad, according to West Las Vegas Superintendant Dr. Jim Abreu.
Abreu said he discovered on Monday that Santiago Armijo had participated in informal summer team workouts, and then told the West Las Vegas athletics director and football coach that Armijo is not to continue with the team until all documentation concerning Armijo's plea deal in the case has been reviewed.
Armijo has maintained his innocence since allegations were first leveled last year against six Robertson players accused of sodomizing teammates with broomsticks during a preseason training camp in August. The six eventually were charged with a number of felonies, and two have entered pleas.
Armijo pled no contest in March to two counts of attempted criminal sexual penetration and one count of conspiracy to commit those crimes.
He avoided jail time after a judge said his involvement in the attacks was less than the other accused assailants. He was sentenced to two years of supervised probation, along with community service and other conditions.
Abreu said WLV officials will need to review the conditions of that probation before Armijo can participate in any workouts.
Armijo and another of the accused former Robertson players, Marcus Gutierrez, have applied to transfer to West Las Vegas for the upcoming school year, Abreu said, but no decision has been made yet on whether the transfers will be allowed. Gutierrez is awaiting trial in the case.
Abreu said Armijo does not officially need to be accepted as a West Las Vegas student before joining the football team in summer activities, because of the informal nature of these early, offseason workouts.
“I think he just showed up,” Abreu said of Armijo. “I think the coach (recently hired ex-Santa Fe High School head coach Mike Ulibarri) didn't know the situation. I don't think he knew the background.”
Calls seeking comment from Ulibarri and Armijo's lawyer were not returned on Tuesday.
