Fishing Report
This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
Crews stocked 21,154 rainbow trout averaging 9.9 inches in length in the following waters: Bluewater Lake, Bonito Lake, Cimarron River west of Cimarron, Cimarron River Gravel Pit Lakes, Clayton Lake, El Rito Creek, Fawn Lakes, Glenwood Pond, Holy Ghost Creek, Monastery Lake, Mora at Pecos River Drainage, Mt. View Ponds, Panchuela Creek, Pecos River from Cowles to village of Pecos, Red River above and below Questa, Red River East and West Fork, Red River Hatchery Pond, Rio Ruidoso, Shuree Ponds and Winsor Creek.
Catches of the week: Cochiti Lake: On June 13, Corey Muniz caught a 36-inch northern pike. He was using a deep diving crank baits. On June 21, Frank Tester of Albuquerque caught a 35-inch northern pike. He was using a white Model B Bomber.
Elephant Butte: On June 15 and 16, Gary and Barbara Willmart of Navajo Dam caught limits of striped bass. Most of the fish exceeded 20 pounds and 32 inches in length. They were using live minnows. On June 21, Edward J. Lopez of Las Cruces caught a 22-inch, 4-pound walleye. He was fishing the mouth of Rock Canyon and using a small swim bait. Eagle Nest Lake: On June 18, Vinnie Fernandez of Santa Fe caught a 20-inch and a 21-inch rainbow trout. He was fishing from the bank at the south end of the lake and using red power bait on the bottom. Chama River: On June 19, David Dimas of Albuquerque caught a 21-inch rainbow trout. He was using a night crawler. Lake Van: On June 20, Andrew Gross of Roswell caught a 24-inch, 10-pound channel catfish. He was using a dip bait. Sumner Lake: On June 20, Gary Smith of Fort Sumner caught a 5.5-pound largemouth bass. Fenton Lake: On June 20, Jacob Quintana age 14 of Albuquerque caught a 32-inch German brown. He was using a Panther Martin. Santa Rosa Lake: On June 21, Steve Johnson of Albuquerque caught a 25-inch walleye. He was trolling a Rapala SR5 CW in 8-to-12 feet of water. On June 22, Robert Sena caught a 34-inch, 20-pound channel catfish. He was using an 8 inch Pecos River chub.
CHARETTE LAKES: Trout fishing was good using Kastmasters, worms under a bobber and power bait. Fishing for perch was fair using worms.
CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake as of Monday was 26 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using worms, spinners, salmon eggs, San Juan worms, caddis and copper John Barrs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was slow-to-fair using power bait and Pistol Petes.
CLAYTON LAKE: Trout fishing was very good using gold spoons. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was very light due to bad weather conditions.
CONCHAS LAKE: It was another good week for catching small bass. Anglers did well using top water lures, tubes, senkos, brush hogs, smallie beavers, lizards and crank baits. Fishing was good using worms and flies for bluegill. Fishing was fair using minnows, spoons, bottom bouncer spinner/night crawler rigs and grubs at 12-to-22 feet for walleye. Fishing for white bass was fair using crank baits, grubs, minnows and spinners. Fishing for catfish was slow-to-fair using cut bait, liver, night crawlers and shrimp. We had no reports on other species.
COYOTE CREEK: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, corn and elk hair caddis.
EAGLE NEST LAKE: Fishing from boats was quite good this past week using spinner/worm combinations, Pistol Petes, spoons and power bait for trout and kokanee. Fishing from the bank was fair using power bait for trout. Fishing for perch was fair using worms.
HOPEWELL LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair using power bait, gold bead hares ears, caddis and worms.
LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing at Lake Maloya was good using pink and sherbet power bait, homemade dough baits, Pistol Petes and grasshoppers. Fishing at Lake Alice was good using power bait and Pistol Petes.
MCALLISTER LAKE: Closed due to high golden algae content.
MAXWELL LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using power bait. We had no reports on other species.
MONASTERY LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good using Pistol Petes, worms and power bait.
MORPHY LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good using homemade dough baits, power bait, worms, corn, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes.
PECOS RIVER: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 131 cfs. Trout fishing was good using stone flies, elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs, spinners, salmon eggs, power bait and night crawlers. Fishing on Holy Ghost Creek and the Mora was good using worms.
RED RIVER: Water flow below the hatchery was 128 cfs. Trout fishing there and on the Forks was good using power bait, spinners, salmon eggs, night crawlers, stimulators, streamers and copper John Barrs.
RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 852 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using night crawlers, spinners, spoons, woolly buggers, San Juan worms and salmon eggs. Fishing was fair using flies, swim baits and jerk baits for northern pike. We had no reports on smallmouth bass.
SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing was fair using cut bait for catfish to 24 inches. A few northern pike were caught using red and white Mepps spinners and Rat-L-Traps. We had no reports on other species.
STORRIE LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using power bait, worms and homemade dough baits. Fishing was slow-to-fair using liver and hot dogs for catfish.
UTE LAKE: Fishing was good using top water lures, crank baits and grubs for white bass. Fishing was fair using minnows, spoons, jigs and bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing was fair-to-good using worms for bluegill. Fishing for smallmouth bass was good using grubs, senkos, smallie beavers, worms, jerk baits and crank baits. Fishing was slow-to-fair using minnows and liver at night for catfish. Fishing for largemouth bass and crappie was slow.
ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing was good using jig and grub combinations, jerk baits, spinner/night crawler rigs, minnows and crank baits for walleye. The best reports came from anglers fishing the upper end of the lake and into the Chama River canyon. Fishing was fair using jerk baits, top water lures, tubes, senkos and crank baits for smallmouth bass. A few crappie were taken on minnows and jigs. Fishing was fair using liver, minnows and night crawlers for catfish.
ANIMAS RIVER: We had no reports from anglers this week.
BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing was fair using flies, swim baits, spinner baits and jerk baits for tiger musky to 40 inches. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver and shrimp. Fishing for trout was slow.
CANJILON LAKES: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair using spinners, Pistol Petes, worms and power bait.
CHAMA RIVER: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 192 cfs and 491 cfs, respectively. Trout fishing below El Vado was fair-to-good using night crawlers, spinners, streamers and salmon eggs. Below Abiquiu fishing was fair using spinners, worms and jerk baits.
COCHITI LAKE: Fishing was good using worms, poppers and woolly buggers for bluegill. The bluegills were on the beds, and anglers fishing for them also picked up a few smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using white Bombers, swim baits, chatter baits and spinner baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using liver, dough baits and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
EL VADO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using power bait, night crawlers and spinners.
FENTON LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good using white wax worms and power bait and silver spinners when the sun was out. During cloudy times, best baits were woolly buggers, Pistol Petes, emergers and worms.
HERON LAKE: Kokanee fishing was very good using spinner/corn combos at 20 feet. Lots of limits of fish to 17.5 inches were reported. Fishing from the bank in the Piedra Cove and Ridge Rock areas was good using power bait and salmon eggs for rainbow trout and a few kokanee. We had no reports on lake trout.
JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez as of Monday morning was 49 cfs near Jemez Springs. Trout fishing on the Cebolla was good using worms for 7- to 9-inch browns. Fishing on the Jemez, Rio Guadalupe, San Antonio and East Fork was good using grasshoppers, stone flies, worms, salmon eggs and spinners.
MANZANO LAKE: Trout fishing was fair using power bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spoons.
MCGAFFEY LAKE: Fishing was fair using liver and dough bait for catfish.
NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing was good using crank baits, senkos, tubes, clousers, woolly buggers and poppers for smallmouth bass. The best reports came from anglers fishing Francis Canyon and the San Juan arm. Fishing was good using crank baits, swim baits and spinner baits for northern pike. Fishing was fair-to-good using worms and poppers for bluegill. A few crappie were caught by anglers using minnows and jigs. Fishing for kokanee was slow with a few taken on spinner/worm and spinner/corn combos fished at 20-to-40 feet on the main lake. We had no reports on other species.
RAMAH LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair using Pistol Petes, spinners, power bait and worms.
SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 504 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using dead chickens, parachute Adams, emergers, leeches, San Juan worms, small hair jigs and small streamers. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using night crawlers, woolly buggers, power bait, red annelids, copper John Barrs and jerk baits.
SANTA CRUZ LAKE: Trout fishing was fair-to-good using power bait, worms, spoons, Pistol Petes and spinners.
TINGLEY BEACH: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was good using worms, power bait, gold spoons, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was good using stink bait and shrimp for catfish. Fishing at the Catch-and-Release Pond was good using dead chickens, ants, mosquitoes, small streamers and UFOs. Special note: The bag limit for trout on the Youth and Central Ponds has been changed from 5 per day to 4 per day, and the possession limit has been changed from 10 trout to 4 trout.
