SF Cop Charged With DWI

Journal Staff Report
A Santa Fe police lieutenant was arrested early Sunday for aggravated DWI after he almost struck a Rio Rancho police car.
Stephen C. Ryan, 44, of Rio Rancho, is charged with aggravated driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquors or drugs and failure to maintain lanes, according to a criminal complaint.
Ryan, an officer with the Santa Fe Police Department, was put on administrative leave Monday, pending a revocation and/or court proceedings, Santa Fe Police Deputy Chief Abram Anaya said.
“The department takes very seriously these allegations,” he said.
According to a Rio Rancho police report, Ryan was driving his pickup north on Golf Course Road in Rio Rancho about 1:40 a.m. Sunday when police saw him almost strike a curb and swerve into another lane. When police tried to pull over the truck, it began to back up and an officer had to drive in reverse about 20 feet to avoid being hit. The truck then stopped and Ryan later said he accidentally put the gear in reverse.
Ryan refused to submit to an alcohol breath test, but about two hours later he asked to take it, the report says. He said he was taking four types of medication and had drunk one beer earlier. He was arrested and taken to the Sandoval County Detention Center.
