          VALENTINA CHACON, 80, of Alcalde died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 12.
        She was a devout Catholic, loving wife, mother and mother-in-law. She was well-loved by everyone. She loved baking and cooking, and made the best menudo ever.
        She was preceded in death by her parents, Alejandrino and Josefina Gallegos; sisters, Bernie Martinez, Rose Gallegos and Josephine Mascareñas; brother, Sam Gallegos; in-laws, Adelaido and Frutosa Chacon; sisters-in-law, Mary Lina Martinez and Sara Gallegos.
        She is survived by her husband, Alfonso Chacon of Alcalde; daughter, Marylina Tanuz (Victor) of Alcalde; nephew like a son, Richie Guillen (Lenora) of Ohkay Owingeh; sister, Charlotte Martinez (Cipriano) of Alcalde; brothers, Alex Gallegos, John Allen Gallegos (Florence), all of Alcalde; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Sosten Mascareñas, Nora Gallegos, Candie Valdez (Joe) of Riverside, Josie Guillen (companion Joe Leyba) of Alcalde; and many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
        Public visitation will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Alcalde, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at the church, with burial to follow at Alcalde Catholic Cemetery.

        RAQUEL MARISELA GARCIA, 3, a lifetime resident of Las Vegas, N.M., died Tuesday, Jan. 11, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
        She was born Dec. 18, 2007, in Las Vegas to Matthew Montoya and Marisela Garcia. Raquel loved her grandpa Pancho and her cousin Justin. She loved animals, and her favorite pet was her dog, Shadow. She also had chickens, rabbits, donkeys and her pony Lady.
        She was preceded in death by her maternal great-great-grandparents, Benito and Lazarita Padilla; maternal great-grandparents, Connie and Guadalupe Silva; uncle, Ruben Silva; and cousin, Paul Silva.
        She is survived by her mother, Marisela Garcia of Las Vegas; father, Matthew Montoya (girlfriend Leandra) of Albuquerque; baby sister, Estrella Chavez of Albuquerque; grandparents, Frank and Susie Garcia of Las Vegas, Mary Ann Montoya, Tammy and Lee Griego, all of Albuquerque; great-grandmothers, Elena Montoya of Colorado, Gran Grandma of Albuquerque; aunts and uncles, Armando Heras (girlfriend Tanya), Fernando Heras (girlfriend Natasha), all of Albuquerque, Francisco Garcia and Micaela Garcia, both of Las Vegas; many great-aunts and -uncles, cousins and other relatives.
        Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. today, Jan. 14, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, N.M. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the church. Interment will follow at Padilla Family Cemetery in Manuelitas.

        MARY JO HENDRICKSON, 66, of Rio Chama died Saturday, Jan. 8, after a brief illness.
        She was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and made her career in nursing. She retired after 20 years of service at Las Cumbres Learning Services. She was an animal lover and loved the outdoors. She loved her family and friends and will be dearly missed.
        She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ermina Hendrickson; son, Roy Paul Elam; and brother, Buddy Gould.
        She is survived by her children, Tony Elam, Tonia Elam and husband Carl Gonzales and Timothee Salazar, all of Albuquerque, and Tricia Garcia of Rio Chama; grandchildren, Isabella and Benjamin Salazar, both of Albuquerque; brothers and sisters, Walter Gould (Gloria) and Thomas Gould (Harriet), all of Española, and Gloria Moseley of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister-in-law, Charlotte Gould of Española; and many extended family members and friends.

        EDDIE J. HERRERA, 71, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, in Albuquerque,
        He was born May 23, 1939, in Gascon, N.M., to Celestino Herrera and Isabel Rodarte. He lived in Las Vegas until his illness took him to Albuquerque, allowing him to be closer to his daughter, Edwina. He was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and retired after many years of service. He was a business agent for the postal union for many years and served as its president for the state of New Mexico. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Everyone who came into contact with him remembers him for his friendly demeanor.
        He was preceded in death by his parents, Celestino Herrera and Isabel Martinez.
        He is survived by his daughters, Edwina Ortiz (Moises) and Krystal Herrera; grandchildren, Diego and Alicia Ortiz, Brandon Herrera, Leroy Romero, Justin and Jacob Jauregui; sisters, Odilia Cantrell (George), Flora Aragon (Bennie), Joann Castellano (Rudy) and Bernice Martinez; brothers, Dan Martinez (Patsy), Richard Martinez (Nancy); and many nieces and nephews.
        Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Jan. 14, in Saint Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals and Cremations. All services will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, starting with a rosary 7 p.m. today, Jan. 14. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, with burial to follow at Rodarte Family Cemetery in Gascon.

        GEORGE D. MARES, 46, of Canon died Thursday, Jan. 13.
        He was preceded in death by his parents, Eduardo and Consuelo Mares; and sister, Vickie Rodriguez.
        He is survived by his children, Kimberly, Kevin and Marissa Mares; brothers, Alfred Mares (Deborah), Michael Mares (Roberta) and Larry Mares; sisters, Jo Anne Sandoval (Tommy), Elsie Marquez (Ramon) and Alice Mares (Mike Sanchez); godsons, Marcos Romo and Miguel Gonzales; mother of his children, Lupita Garcia; and many other relatives.
        Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at Nuestra Senora de Dolores Catholic Church in Canon. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at the church, with interment to follow at Nuestra Senora de Dolores Cemetery.

        MOIRA WHITING WALDEN, 87, died peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 11, at her home in Galisteo.
        She was born in New York City on April 15, 1923, to Kenneth Whiting, captain, USN, and Edna Andersen. She married Howard T. Walden Jr. in Larchmont, N.Y., on June 15, 1946. She received a two-year diploma from Sarah Lawrence. She was a volunteer literacy tutor since 1990 and taught Sunday school, 7th to 10th grade, for six years at St. Thomas' Episcopal in Mamaroneck, N.Y. She was a member of Mended Hearts, Santa Fe Chapter; served in L.A.V.E.S during WWII, as central tower operator; and of the Galisteo Fire and Rescue. She also belonged to Bowl with Biddy Bowlers of Santa Fe, served on the Board of Friends of CSF Library for six years, as secretary, vice president, president and treasurer from 1985-92.
        She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard T. Walden Jr.; and son, Robert Stewart Walden.
        She is survived by her children, Virginia W. Walden of Galisteo, Howard T. Walden III (Laurel) of Seattle, Henry D. Walden of Pecos, Moira M. Walden of Boothbay, Maine, Daniel M. Walden (Yvonne) of Oceanport, N.J.; and three grandchildren.
        There will be a memorial service at 14-A The Hill, Galisteo, home of Moira Walden, from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15.
