UNM Takes Important First Step in Standards

Remember when suggesting the University of New Mexico raise its admission standards would get you fired? No more. What has been described as UNM's unique culture has evolved enough so the school can start setting its new students up to pass and graduate rather than fail and drop out.
Regents approved the higher admissions standards Monday, after more than two years of groundwork by the university administration under President David Schmidly. Starting in fall 2011, high school seniors with big academic dreams but minimal education tools will no longer face the non-choice of going to UNM before they're ready or not going to college at all. They will be required to take more college prep before they graduate and, if necessary, be allowed to get up to speed at community colleges while being classified as UNM students. That's taken a concerted effort from educators at all three levels to coordinate a comprehensive plan for student success.
Over two years the university will increase its required entrance GPA from 2.25 to 2.5. Yes, it's a modest first step and more is needed. But it's one UNM has needed to take for years — not only for the success of the school but for the success of the students it serves. And it's a step with a strong footing in realism.
