Praise for Heroic Acts
Family conflicts too often spill into the workplace, sometimes fatally. That unfortunate scenario seems to play out somewhere across the country every year.
Last July in Albuquerque, when Robert Reza, 37, went on a shooting rampage at Emcore, his former employer, the city's sense of security was shattered. Reza didn't just target his ex-girlfriend, he also aimed a semiautomatic handgun randomly at other workers.
Police dispatchers fielded 30 calls to 911 from frantic employees as chaos descended upon the photovoltaic facility. Officers responded within minutes. When Reza's shooting spree was over, two women were dead, four people were wounded and he had turned the gun on himself.
Albuquerque Police Department officers credited their training and experience in gaining control of the deadly scene. We should add courage to that list. On Friday, 13 officers who responded to the dangerous situation were recognized for their heroism. Outstanding Service Medals were given to Art Acosta, Amy Marmon-Bisetti, Dave Hinson, Scott Lopez, Eric Martinez, Wayne McCumber, Geoff Stone, J.T. Stone, John Stott, Frank Tillman, Joseph Tran, Michael Woolley and Johnny Yara.
The ceremony was a poignant reminder that police officers are prepared to insert themselves into deadly situations on behalf of and for the protection of the public. These officers and others deserve the community's sincere thanks.
