APS Moves Quickly To Address Transgression

This time there was no extended administrative leave with pay. No implied tolerance of bad behavior. No unspoken protection of a poor performer.
       Thank you, Albuquerque Public Schools.
Superintendent Winston Brooks stood up for students, for professional educators, for parents and for taxpayers on Wednesday when he fired a 33-year-old teacher after she admitted to having sex with a 13-year-old student.
The school district received a tip on the activities between Kristy Sanchez-Trujillo and the boy on Tuesday. Sanchez-Trujillo — who teaches social studies, spends time on a social networking site and has a sick, disturbed idea of what's socially acceptable — was put on paid leave Wednesday morning as the inquiry began but was fired hours later after admitting to having sexual contact with the student.
The former Jimmy Carter Middle School teacher was later booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on suspicion of criminal sexual penetration.
“In my mind, when a teacher confesses to having a sexual relationship with a minor, there's not much to think about,” Brooks says. “I think it should be made clear that inappropriate behavior such as this by school employees will not be tolerated, period.”
       Thank you.
