AG Ready To Go After Corruption
“With great power comes great responsibility.” This quote is posted on a plaque outside the office of the Attorney General of Rhode Island. I saw it there a couple of weeks ago while attending the national conference for the states' attorneys general. The admonition was given to fictional character Peter Parker by his kind Uncle Ben. I believe the idea, however, is one of importance to all public officials.   (Saturday, July 05, 2008)

Public Support Drives New License Success
The new driver's license is here, and the Motor Vehicle Division would like to extend a big thanks to the public and the many businesses and organizations across the state that have helped make the new driver's license procedure such a big success.   (Thursday, July 03, 2008)

APD Must 'fess Up, Revise Interrogation Procedures
Journal readers can't have missed Saturday's front-page story about how DNA evidence cleared my client Robert Gonzales of murder after two and a half years in jail. And you can't have missed that Robert confessed to the murder at the time.   (Thursday, July 03, 2008)

Is the War on Drugs Worth What it Costs?
The merit of public-spending programs depends not only on their objectives, but also on the extent to which they meet those objectives at a justifiable cost.   (Wednesday, July 02, 2008)

A Green Path Forward
In the absence of national leadership, state and local governments nationwide are adopting aggressive goals and enacting sensible strategies to reduce the impact of skyrocketing energy costs on their residents and businesses. Mayors from more than 800 cities, including Albuquerque, have signed the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. The city of Albuquerque is leading by example, by adopting the Architecture 2030 Challenge, and requiring new or renovated city buildings to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating. These actions will help make Albuquerque and other forward-thinking cities more sustainable, and help demonstrate a path forward for national programs to address climate change.   (Wednesday, July 02, 2008)

What Court's Ruling Means at Gitmo
GUANTANAMO, Cuba — The Supreme Court issued a controversial decision last week affording limited rights to detainees held at Guantanamo Bay. Predictably, my e-mail exploded with emotional reactions, with many asking for my view of the ruling. Since I am neither a political analyst nor an attorney, I will leave those arguments to those more knowledgeable. I can, however, speak to the immediate reaction “on the ground” at Guantanamo.   (Monday, June 30, 2008)

Protect N.M. Land and Its Many Uses
LAS CRUCES — The Wilderness Act of 1964 provides the framework for the use and management of designated wilderness areas. Wilderness is the most restrictive land use designation available, and one of its most contested aspects is access. Motorized vehicles and even mountain bikes and motorized wheelchairs are prohibited.   (Sunday, June 29, 2008)

Minimum Wage Hikes Worsen Job Chances for Teens, Blacks
Just over a year ago, both the U.S. Congress and the New Mexico Legislature passed minimum wage hikes. New Mexico acted first, raising the rate to $6.50 per hour (to be increased to $7.50 by January of 2009). The federal wage was raised to $5.85 an hour with that rate set to rise to $7.25 by July of 2009.   (Friday, June 27, 2008)

'Safe' Seats Lower Voter Turnout in N.M., Other States
WASHINGTON — When Barack Obama decided last week to throw off the constraints on campaign spending that go with the acceptance of public financing, he was rightly criticized for rigging the system in his own favor.   (Friday, June 27, 2008)
